Sugar Crisp 14 oz. versions 1-1, 1-2, 2-1 and 2-2
When Martin's card was printed on both the green and yellow bottom flap boxes, it showed no pupils or cornea in his eyes—they were completely white. At some point, whether it was in the middle of one print run or between print runs, Post "fixed" Martin's eyes by poking a spot on the black rotogravure cylinder plate which caused the black ink to adhere to the plate and transfer to the paper essentially creating eye pupils. The process wasn't perfect and the pupils look to be off in version 2-2. This can be further complicated when color registration is off and the pupils can vary in position. Version 1 does not have a blue dot on Martin's jersey on his right side as circled on version 2. Version 1-1 has no pupils and no blue dot. Version 1-2 has no blue dot but does have eye pupils. Version 2-1 has a blue dot and no pupils. Version 2-2 has a blue dot and eye pupils.
The two versions with eye pupils are mechanical variations, not planned by Post as original prints but created by an on-the-fly fix. A master master set of 750 cards would include one each of a Martin card with and without the blue dot on the jersey (green and yellow bottom flaps). Collecting the two versions with eye pupils simply augments the master master set. |
